PEDARA
15 kms from Catania - 610 a.s.l.
The little town is built on two low hills, surrounded by vineyards. Wine
is one of the staple items of the economy - the other is tourism. Archaeological
excavation carried out near the village show that Pedara is of Greek origin.
Damaged by the 1693 earthquake, it was rebuilt thanks to the tenacity
of don Diego Pappalardo, architect and knight of Malta, who designed such
lovely monuments for Pedara as the Cathedral -dedicated to St. Catherine
- completed in 1705, with a wide façade, a quadrangular bell tower with
a conic dome, and two eighteenth - century baronial palaces, richly decorated
with carved lava stone giving them a lacy appearance, that don Diego Pappalardo
kept for himself.
