BELPASSO
17 kms from Catania - 551 a.s.l.
The old town used to be called Malpasso (Bad Step) and when
it was completely destroyed by lava flows in 1669, the newly-reebuilt
town was renamed Belpasso (Good Step). At that time it was the architect
Giovanni Bellia who was responsible for the reconstruction of the town,
to wich he gave a geometrical chessboard design. For this reason the streets
are indicated by number and direction, for example First East Street.
Belpasso today is famous for nougat and confectionery, besides for the
flourishing cottage-industry of woodworkers. It has a remarkable tradition
for the theatre, an art to which it contributed by becoming the birthplace
of Nino Martoglio. Every year in Belpasso motorcyclists coming from all
over Europe meet for their annual rally.
